CHF’s museum and conference center houses a groundbreaking exhibition, Making Modernity, and a changing exhibits gallery. The new facilities officially opened on 3 October 2008.

A historic building and renovation
CHF’s integrated museum and conference center was a $20 million project that involved the renovation of the 1865 First National Bank building at CHF’s headquarters in Philadelphia. The transformation of the space and the design of Making Modernity were the collaborative effort of SaylorGregg Architects, CHF’s curatorial and exhibit staff, and Ralph Appelbaum Associates, renowned designers of the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.

The renovated facility employs ecologically sensitive Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) principles, including new insulation, wall tile made of recycled glass, and bathroom floors made of recycled cans.

2009 AIA Citation of Merit Award for Architectural Excellence

The Pennsylvania chapter of the American Institute of Architects has awarded the CHF Museum and Conference Center a Citation of Merit award for architectural excellence.

The design, by SaylorGregg Architects, was selected from among 97 submissions, and described by the jury as follows:

"This project is the renovation of a historic former masonry bank and an adjacent modern glazed building, into a museum and conference space. The modern insertion into the old interior is both bold and respectful, contrasting yet complementary. Preserved columns and arched windows reside comfortably alongside modern displays and a steel and glass mezzanine. The circulation plan and generous use of translucent glass and lighting are beautifully integrated, and provide visual interest and appreciation of the entire two-story volume."
