CHF’s world-class collections span five centuries and incorporate thousands of historical objects, from chemistry’s origins through the 20th century. Many of these objects can be seen in our permanent exhibition, Making Modernity.

In addition to the collections listed here, CHF’s holdings include books, rare volumes, journals, and other printed materials through the Othmer Library of Chemical History.

Fine art
CHF’s fine art collection contains works depicting chemists and chemistry-related themes, such as 17th-century paintings of alchemy labs and portraits of chemical forefathers. Learn more >

Our photographic collection of 20th-century images represents the people, processes, laboratories, and historic events that define the recent history of chemistry. Learn more >

Scientific instruments
CHF holds an unparalleled collection of 20th-century scientific instruments as well as earlier lab apparatus and glassware. Several hundred objects make up this rare collection. Learn more >

Archival collections
CHF’s archival collections include the personal papers of prominent scientists and the records of professional and trade organizations. Also included are stamps, instrument manuals, and advertisements related to the chemical and molecular sciences. Learn more >
